During his first U.S. tour, taiko sensation and Kodo founder Eitetsu Hayashi will introduce Northern California to an original program inspired by the works of 18th-century painter Jakuchu Ito. The Wings of Flightless Birds combines classical Japanese, jazz, world, and rock music, showcasing Hayashi on taiko and the enormous odaiko drums. Through fierce and nuanced expression, this protean powerhouse gives flight to Ito's birds and releases our spirits into the sky. Eitetsu Hayashi, taiko and odaiko; Shin-ichi Kinoshita, shamisen; Keusuke Doi, shajuhachi; two additional taiko drummers.
Eitetsu Hayashi is one of the most impressive artists I have ever seen. When he plays the drums, time stops and you can feel the universe breathing. &emdash;Peter Riegelbauer, contra bass, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
