Four of Iran's finest musical
virtuosos showcase the haunting melodies and complex
ornamentation of classical Persian music. Superstar vocalist
Mohammed Reza Shajarian, a national treasure in his native
Iran, collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma on the Silk Road Project
and has been a key figure in the recent re-blossoming of
Persian musical forms. He is joined by tar (plucked lute)
and setar (Persian sitar) master Hossein Alizadeh; kamancheh
(spiked fiddle) virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor; and his son,
Homayoun, on the tombak (hand drum). Committed to preserving
their country's musical heritage, the ensemble specializes
in Persian radif &emdash; the folk-infused tradition of
hypnotic melodies and rhythms inspired by poetry dating back
