WEEK 6
November 3 Field Trip to UC-Berkeley Concert

Four of Iran's finest musical virtuosos showcase the haunting melodies and complex ornamentation of classical Persian music. Superstar vocalist Mohammed Reza Shajarian, a national treasure in his native Iran, collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma on the Silk Road Project and has been a key figure in the recent re-blossoming of Persian musical forms. He is joined by tar (plucked lute) and setar (Persian sitar) master Hossein Alizadeh; kamancheh (spiked fiddle) virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor; and his son, Homayoun, on the tombak (hand drum). Committed to preserving their country's musical heritage, the ensemble specializes in Persian radif &emdash; the folk-infused tradition of hypnotic melodies and rhythms inspired by poetry dating back to the seventh century.
